About ICOM

ICOM is an international non-governmental organization established for the advancement and development of museums. It is a global community where museums and museum professionals from all over the world can discuss and exchange ethical standards and innovative practices. Since its creation in 1946, ICOM has been committed to the protection and promotion of museums and the heritage entrusted to them. ICOM also promotes the essential role of museums as sources of information, inspiration and insight in the development of sustainable societies.

ICOM has National Committees and Regional Alliances organized by country, as well as International Committees organized according to various museum specialties. In addition, there are Standing Committees and Working Groups that consider issues related to museum ethics and responses to emergencies such as disasters. Each holds annual meetings to exchange the latest information and share knowledge. Every three years, a General Conference is held where all committees gather together.

ICOM has established the Code of Ethics, which provides basic guidelines to ensure that museums around the world are able to operate in accordance with certain standards. As an organization representing museums and museum professionals on a global scale, ICOM maintains cooperation with international organizations such as UNESCO, the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) and the International Criminal Police Organization (INTERPOL) to protect heritage and prevent illegal trafficking, and to build risk management and support systems for cultural property in emergencies such as conflicts and natural disasters. ICOM also prioritizes the sharing of knowledge and know-how, and is committed to human resource development for the expanding museum community around the world. By hosting world-class training programs, ICOM promotes intercultural dialogue and exchange among museum professionals.
